What fish can you catch in Winter Harbour?
Winter Harbour offers an incredible variety of fishing. During our season we target Chinook and Coho salmon, halibut, lingcod and seasonal Albacore tuna.
Over the course of a multi-day adventure, our goal is to target several species and give every guest the best overall fishing experience and variety Winter Harbour has to offer.
When is the best time to fish Winter Harbour?
Our season runs from mid-June through the end of August because the entire period offers excellent fishing. Rather than one “best” time, the opportunities change as summer progresses.
June and early July offer excellent salmon fishing along with some of our most prolific halibut and lingcod opportunities. Coho become more abundant from mid-July onward, while August provides strong salmon fishing and the best opportunity for Albacore tuna when offshore conditions cooperate.
July and August also typically provide some of our nicest summer weather.
When is the best time for Chinook salmon?
Chinook fishing is productive throughout our season.
June is primarily focused on inshore and protected waters, including salmon entering Quatsino Sound to feed during their migration. As summer progresses, offshore opportunities expand, while August can also bring large Chinook into Quatsino Sound—a fishery sometimes referred to locally as “Hogust.”
There really isn’t one best month. Each part of the season offers a different Chinook fishing experience.
When is the best time for halibut and lingcod?
Halibut and lingcod are available throughout our season, with June and early July generally being the most prolific.
Both species remain available later in the summer, although we may need to dedicate more fishing time specifically to targeting them.
Can you catch Albacore tuna in Winter Harbour?
Yes. Albacore tuna generally become a realistic option from early August onward.
As offshore currents warm and move closer to Winter Harbour, tuna become more accessible. Later August generally provides the most consistent opportunities, but tuna fishing always depends on the location of the fish, ocean conditions and suitable offshore weather.
What is the “Salmon Highway”?
The “Salmon Highway” refers to the edge of the continental shelf, a migration pathway used by salmon travelling along the coast.
Offshore structure and productive waters along the shelf support baitfish that feeding salmon rely on during their migration. Winter Harbour provides unusually close access to these waters, with the edge of the continental shelf roughly 12 miles offshore in some areas.
Do you always fish offshore?
No. Where we fish depends on the season, weather and where the best fishing opportunities are.
Quatsino Sound can provide excellent inshore salmon fishing, particularly early in the season and again when large Chinook enter the Sound later in the summer. Offshore fishing provides additional opportunities as the season progresses but is always weather-dependent.
Packages & Your Trip
How much does a Winter Harbour fishing adventure cost?
Our 2027 Winter Harbour fishing adventures are $1,950 per day for your entire private group of up to four guests, plus applicable taxes and gratuity.
The rate is for the group—not per person—and there is no additional charter charge for adding guests within the four-person limit.
What is included in a Winter Harbour fishing adventure?
Our packages include professional guided fishing, accommodations, breakfast, lunch on the water, dinner, bait, tackle, fishing equipment and filleting of your catch.
Trips are typically three or four days and are designed for private groups of up to four guests.
What does a typical fishing day look like?
A typical day starts early, with coffee at camp around 4:30 a.m. before we get ready and head to the marina. Breakfast is served on the boat so we can make the most of the early morning fishing, and we’re typically fishing within the first 30 minutes of leaving the harbour.
Lunch is enjoyed on the boat while we fish, allowing us to make the most of our time on the water. We typically return to Winter Harbour around 3:00–4:00 p.m., depending on the day’s fishing, weather and conditions.
What happens if the weather is too rough to fish offshore?
Safety always comes first, and offshore fishing depends on suitable weather and ocean conditions.
One of Winter Harbour’s advantages is access to the protected waters of Quatsino Sound. These waters can provide excellent fishing in their own right and give us additional options when offshore conditions aren’t suitable.
Preparing for Your Trip
What should I bring to Winter Harbour?
Once your trip is booked, you’ll receive a confirmation letter with detailed information about what to bring, travel arrangements and preparing for your adventure.
West Coast weather can change quickly, so we recommend comfortable layered clothing, waterproof footwear and personal rain gear. We provide rain gear if needed, but most guests prefer bringing their own.
Guests driving to Winter Harbour should also bring large coolers for transporting their catch home. Fishing equipment, bait and tackle are provided.
Do I need a fishing licence?
Yes. Guests are responsible for purchasing their own B.C. Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licence before the trip. If you plan to retain salmon, you will also need a Salmon Conservation Stamp.

How do I get to Winter Harbour?
Most guests drive to Winter Harbour on northern Vancouver Island. Detailed travel information and directions are provided with your booking confirmation.
For guests who prefer to fly, pickup from Port Hardy Airport can also be arranged.
Booking Your Adventure
What is required to reserve a Winter Harbour fishing adventure?
A 25% retainer is required to confirm your reservation and secure your fishing dates. The remaining balance is due upon arrival at camp.
Because we accommodate a limited number of private groups during our Winter Harbour season, your dates are not considered confirmed until the retainer has been received.
What is your cancellation policy?
Retainers are generally non-refundable. If you need to cancel your trip, the value of your paid retainer will typically be issued as a gift certificate valid for two years from the date of your originally booked adventure.
